Y’all this is one of those little tips I wish I had know a loooong time ago. Once you see how easy it is to rust metal using cinnamon, it will knock your socks off. And I have to warn you, after trying this little trick to making metal look rusty, EVER-E-THING is gonna be rusty up in here.
I am always seeing these adorable little galvanized pieces here and there. Craft stores, the dollar tree…etc But I rarely snag one simply because it looks a little too shiny. I like for the metal to have a nice little age to it. I discovered this need little rusting kit and used it to rust my hardware on my DIY kitchen island, but I wanted something a little quicker for crafting.
SUPPLIES
- Cinnamon
- Mod Podge
That’s literally it! Of course you need whatever metal you wish to age. In this case, it was a corrugated heart from Hobby Lobby and a cute little Dollar General sign to attach it too.
I didn’t take very many pictures of the process because it is pretty much self explanatory. All you literally have to do it apply a thin coat of mod podge to the metal. Sprinkle with cinnamon and then apply another thin coat of mod podge on top.
SERIOUSLY.
The only modifications I would suggest is a secon coat of cinnamon and mod podge for more “rust”. I didn’t even wait between my coats.
For the rest of this project, I stained the little wood piece I found at the local Dollar General and dry brushed it with a white Waverly chalk paint.
Once the sign and the heart were nice and dry. I attached them with hot glue and VIOLA! A beautiful little piece of Valentine’s Day decor that matches the rest of the room.
I have a few other Valentine’s Day DIY’s on the blog as well! Go check them out!
Recently used this to ‘rust’ a small metal piece. Great tip!!
